Case Study - Stopping Smoking

Nick, aged 41, ran a garden centre on the outskirts of London. Running a small business for 6 days a week had become quite stressful and he often worked long and unsociable hours. He had been smoking since the age of 14 having started at school to be part of the in-crowd but had gradually increased his smoking to around 40 a day.  He had tried to stop before by using cold turkey, herbal cigarettes and spent a small fortune in nicotine patches. His problem was that at work he was finding it difficult to cope with stressful moments and he kept relapsing and didn't feel confident without the prop of a cigarette.

He was angry with himself and frustrated about his smoking. His wife had already stopped and every time he looked at his kids, he hoped that they wouldn't smoke. He was hardly being a role model and he felt guilty. He wanted to stop but he didn't know how to. He eventually telephoned and despite having to travel all the way from London to Birmingham, he booked himself an appointment for the following week.

TREATMENT

The first part of Nick's programme was about helping him understand why his was continuing to smoke even though he felt violated every time he did it. Bit by bit he began to understand how cigarettes had deluded him and how he had been tricked and misled over the years by his own feelings about smoking.

Then using hypnosis Nick was given positive reinforcing suggestions that he would feel calm and relaxed now that he was a non smoker. Ego-strengthening messages were given, such as you will feel proud that you have decided to stop smoking." The idea was to plant enough positive ideas into his subconscious to create the desired momentum for change.

The two parts of the programme, the cognitive therapy and the hypnotherapy would give him the knowledge and the increased motivation to stop permanently.

RESULTS

Nick telephoned again some months later to say "thank you" and recommend me to someone else who also wanted to give up smoking. He reported that he hadn't wanted a cigarette since leaving my office and that he now found the whole idea of smoking utterly revolting. An added benefit was that he felt much healthier and was enjoying his children's company and glad he wasn't polluting their lungs with his smoke.

I saw Nick some 3 years later at a function and he was still happy and free from smoking.
