Sexual Problems

Sexual problems can be defined as an inability to derive pleasure and satisfaction from sexual activity. The cause of the problem(s) may be physical or psychological. One of the main barriers to successful performance and enjoyment is simply anxiety.

Problems for Men

Male smokers have a greater risk of not being able to gain an erection. So stop smoking if this applies to you!

Secondly, worrying about performance can cause impotence or premature ejaculation. Repeated failure during intercourse leads to anxiety, frustration, and apprehension. The muscles of the groin need to relax in order to allow blood to flow into the penis and maintain an erection. Anxiety blocks the flow of blood into the penis and prevents the erection. Visualisation can be employed to help direct blood flow to the penis. Ego-strengthening messages can be given during hypnosis to boost performance. The best approach, though, is to remove the anxiety-causing thoughts that lead to tension.

In a controlled study of 79 men with impotence from no known organic cause, only hypnosis proved more effective than a placebo, boosting sexual function by 80 percent (British Journal of Urology, February 1996).

Problems for women

In women, unconscious conflicts concerning sexual activity may reveal themselves in the condition vaginismus. This is an involuntary reflexive spasm of the muscles of the vagina and perineum that prevents penetration from taking place. The causes are thought to include the fear of pain during intercourse and negative attitudes towards the body or the act of sex. The approach taken during hypnotherapy is to reveal the cause of the anxiety, and then resolve it.

Satisfying sex

Treatment can help to remove feelings of awkwardness and the fear of poor sexual performance. It can help people's sexual performance in many other ways too; people who feel guilty about enjoying sex can be given suggestions that they can relax and let go. For people who feel that they have just lost interest in sex, age regression can be used to recall pictured memories of satisfying sexual activity. Visualisation can be used to help people respond to their partner in the way they want. Just as visualisation might prepare someone for a job interview, it can prepare for a sexual encounter. If people feel self conscious about their bodies, they can be given suggestions that their body is perfectly attractive, or, better still, to examine where the negative self image has originated and take steps to build up self-esteem.

Infertility

1. There are theories that stress and anxiety can prevent conception, and since treatment can relieve anxiety, it may help some couples to conceive.

2. Furthermore, smoking can reduce fertility in men, and the more one smokes, the more the ability of sperm to bind to an egg is diminished.

Researchers studied the sperm of 18 men who had smoked at least four cigarettes a day for more than two years. Using a test called the Hemizona Assay, the scientists compared sperm function in the 18 smokers with the sperm of non-smokers. The researchers found that the sperm from almost two-thirds of the smokers failed the test. Although none was infertile, their sperm function was greatly reduced.

"This study confirms what's known," said Dr. Jamie Grifo, director of reproductive endocrinology at New York University Medical Center in New York City.

"If you're smoking and you're infertile, you better stop smoking, because you're not helping your chances," Grifo said. "It's just one of the negative impacts that smoking has on the human body, and it's another reason why one shouldn't smoke."
