Panic Attacks

Panic Attacks are associated with both phobias and other anxiety states, but they can also occur spontaneously in people who have not otherwise previously experienced anxiety.

They are characterised by a sudden and intense sensation of fear and impending doom. If you have a panic attack, you may feel that you are going to die. The fear is accompanied by physical symptoms of breathlessness, tingling fingers, tremor, palpitations (irregular, fast heartbeat), giddiness, and sweating. Many sufferers are 'rooted to the spot' in fear, and the feelings may last for a few minutes to a few hours.

The problem may get worse if over-breathing sets in, because this triggers all sorts of strange sensations such as tingling, palpitations, confusion, cramps, pains and feelings of weakness. Some people may misinterpret the symptoms of a panic attack for something far worse, such as a heart attack. This can make the attack even more severe and frightening. People are often reluctant to reveal that they have had a panic attack for fear of not being able to cope, or looking foolish to others.

Where these feelings come from is not known for sure, and although modern drugs and deep breathing may help with coping with the symptoms, they will not deal with the cause. Hypnotherapy examines where many of the contributing factors leading to a panic attack may have been formed, and once this has been dealt with, sufferers can expect to see a dramatic decrease in their occurrence.
